If you been into The Square recently you will have noticed the goings on at the Parish church. As I write work has just begun on the installation of a new heating system. Any of you who have spent much time in the church this winter will know how badly this is needed and whilst the church will never be as cosy as your living room, we hope that when the work is finished you will no longer need to wrap up as if you were setting out on an arctic expedition!

If things stay on schedule, the work should be completed by the time you read this article, but right now we're at the messy stage. Carpets, floorboards and slabs are being lifted up and dust and noise is filling the church as the heavy components of the long-dead old system are removed.

As I look around what appears to be destruction, I'm reminded of the fact that new beginnings cannot happen without endings. As we near Lent, traditionally a time when people give things up, it’s worth remembering that original purpose of giving things up was to make space for other things. This Lent, amongst other events, we will be inviting people to come and just sit quietly with others – in a warm church, we hope! No preaching, no talking, just the opportunity to rest and be still, to enjoy some space in which new things may begin to grow.
