Aldwick Bay Estate: The private estate of Bognor Regis which is a celebrity paradise

Sussex has several celebrity hotspots. From exclusive Millionaires Row on Brighton’s seafront to the quiet village of West Wittering, famous faces can be found everywhere.

Another such celebrity hotspot is on the Sussex coast in Aldwick. The Aldwick Bay Estate has been a haven for the rich and famous for many years.

While Bognor in general is often seemingly overlooked by people who would prefer to live somewhere more “fancy”, Aldwick Bay Estate seemingly dispels that notion. The estate even has a private section of beach for residents to enjoy.

The estate was founded in 1929 after WHB Fletcher, the former Lord of Aldwick Manor, sold the 575-acre Pagham estate in which he resided. The domain sold for £29,000 – the equivalent of around £2 million in today’s money.

100 acres of this estate on Aldwick Bay was acquired by a London-based property developer who had big visions for the land. It was converted into the Aldwick Bay Estate and over the years has attracted a wide range of famous faces.

According to the estate’s website, the original plans outlined a vision that each property would have enough space to accommodate staff and a driver, with the gardens large enough to create a tennis court. The original plans were not fully adhered to, although the end was a sight to behold with many fabulous homes being built.

Previously on the grounds of the estate was the Bay Court Hotel which attracted a number of celebrities. Those who have stayed at the hotel include Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Jack Hawkins, although the hotel has since been converted into apartments.

Following the Great Storm of 1987, a Residents Association was formed to look after the grounds of the estate to ensure it was never left in poor condition. Many famous inhabitants have lived on the estate since, each contributing to the upkeep of the estate.

One of the most famous former residents was Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s father, who owned two properties at Aldwick Bay Estate, one being used to house guests. High profile visitors who will be staying with Earl Spencer are believed to include Prince Harry and William who visited their mother before the earl died in 1992.

Some other notable residents also lived there Robert Smith, the frontman of The Cure, who is said to have owned property on the estate – although he lived there longer. Music legend Phil Collins is also believed to have lived there in the past.

Other icons such as Nigel Benn, Guy Fletcher, Laurel and Hardy and Norman Wisdom are also believed to have connections to the estate. But with properties costing up to £4m, you better start saving if you want to move.
