Leisure: Major investments revealed for sports and entertainment venues across Sheffield
This phase of work – to 2024 – is part of a long-term investment of over £100m in the facilities over the next 30 years.

It comes as Sheffield City Trust – the city’s biggest leisure provider – returns all major sporting and entertainment venues to the council following financial problems.
Council officials said facilities such as Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge and Arena will likely close so work can be carried out.
“Investment in improved facilities is expected to help retain attendance and use of venues,” they added. “Improved facilities will better meet customer expectations for a modern and welcoming leisure and entertainment offer. This will help encourage more people to be more active, more often.
This phase includes a contingency of £1,225,560 to cover uncertainty around building prices, rising inflation and unforeseen plant or machinery breakdowns.
Works before 2024 include: electrical upgrades; mechanical, lighting and heating installations and roof repairs.
Works before 2024 include: emergency lighting, better storage and replacement lockers.
Works before 2024 include: nothing as it will be rebuilt.
Works before 2024 include: replacing lockers, upgrading the building management system and resurfacing the car park.
Works before 2024 include: replacing the heating and filtration of the competition pool; improvements in the lighting of the competition hall; better sprinkler system; replacement windows, doors and siding; new fire doors; new ski lifts; better sound system; mechanical and electrical improvements; and upgrades to floating floor installations for plunge pools.
Hillsborough Leisure Center
Works before 2024 include: pool repointing, steel frame corrosion repairs, roof repairs, new ventilation system in pool and new lights.
Sheffield English Institute of Sport
Works before 2024 include: lighting upgrades, new sports flooring and corrosion repairs to structural steel.
Works before 2024 include: nothing as the building will be rebuilt.
Works before 2024 include: repairing the roof, upgrading the sound system and lighting.
Works before 2024 include: no major expenditure.
Works before 2024 include: repairs to the building structure.
The council’s finance subcommittee is due to discuss the details at a meeting on Tuesday, September 6.
