Why Sheffield City Trust has shut down Sheffield’s leisure and entertainment…

It comes as Sheffield City Trust – the city’s biggest leisure provider – returns all major sporting and entertainment venues to the council following financial problems.

Sheffield Council has revealed the upgrades each local leisure facility will get from a £19.2million pot of money over the next two years.

Council officials said facilities such as Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge and Arena will likely close so work can be carried out.

“Investment in improved facilities is expected to help retain attendance and use of venues,” they added. “Improved facilities will better meet customer expectations for a modern and welcoming leisure and entertainment offer. This will help encourage more people to be more active, more often.

This phase includes a contingency of £1,225,560 to cover uncertainty around building prices, rising inflation and unforeseen plant or machinery breakdowns.
