Sandwell Aquatic Center – Arup

The Sandwell Aquatics Center is helping to bring a new sporting focus to the city of Birmingham and the Midlands. Open to the public in 2023, the new state-of-the-art leisure facility supports an active and healthy population, providing a venue for international swimming and diving competitions as well as space for the local community.

Arup supported the design of the aquatic center to create a place that leaves a lasting legacy for the health and well-being of the community. Our team has developed engineering concepts that integrate building structure and services to effectively realize functional requirements within the architectural vision.

In just three years, the installation went from concept to completion – a significant speed-up over a typical schedule for a project of this type which will likely take 5-6 years from planning to delivery.

The £70 million investment is also contributing to inclusive growth alongside strengthening the local community to inspire young people, ensuring swimming becomes a must-do activity for Sandwell residents.
