TCIFA and Cargo Express Services Ltd. Women’s Football Champion – Magnetic Media
#TurksandCaicos, November 15, 2022 – Over a hundred girls participated in the first ever All Girls Football Festival in Grand Turk. The event was held in partnership with Cargo Express Services, which connected primary school students Ona Glinton, Eliza Simons and HJ Robinson. Attendees enjoyed a range of activities focusing on different football skills, including match play, led by coaches from the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA).
Friday, November 11e the Grand Turk Parade Grounds was lit up with vibrant pink jerseys – this color symbolizing an intense and burning passion for football and girl power. Representation from all levels of grassroots football was important; i.e. U6, U8, U12 and even U16.
Hailing the day as a success, Olivia Graveley, Assistant to the Director of Women’s Football at TCIFA, who spearheaded the initiative, said: “It was fantastic to see so many girls showing up with so much enthusiasm for play soccer. It was a great opportunity for us to introduce the sport to girls who had never played before, teaching them new skills and rules of the game; but above all allow them to have fun playing football, while making new friends.
Carl Simmons, Director of Cargo Express Services, said, “TCIFA continues to advance the sport of football nationally and internationally, to include diverse age groups and genders competing in success. The Cargo Express Services family is proud to support the efforts of TCIFA and congratulate the organizers on the many successes they have achieved over the years. As a corporate sponsor, we are committed to supporting their efforts to promote the competitive and exciting sport of football. As a proud sponsor of the Girls Football Festival recently held in Grand Turk, we are delighted that this successful event has been fully embraced by the community.
TCIFA continues to seek support from the local community, particularly parents, as part of its drive to boost participation.
“We are incredibly proud of the support we have received,” said TCIFA President Sonia Fulford. TCIFA has worked extremely hard over the years to increase the participation of women and girls in football. This festival has clearly shown the enthusiasm that there is on the island of Grand Turk on the part of young girls when they are offered the opportunity to participate in sports in general, and football in particular. TCIFA is doing its part to ensure the game is appealing to girls and women and helping to build girls’ confidence that football is in fact a sport for them while simultaneously showcasing positive role models – who are both crucial. The idea that football is just a sport for boys has gradually eroded. Everyone has the power to help break the mindset that football is a male-dominated sport, and parents can encourage their daughters to learn more about the sport if they too are interested in it; whether it’s watching matches together, enrolling their kids in weekly soccer practice, or attending their practices and events. Football is for everyone!”
In conjunction with the Girls Football Festival and in partnership with Cargo Express Services, TCIFA’s #GOAM (Girls on a Mission) held their first #PUFP (Pick Up for Progress) campaign on Front Street, Grand Turk. The campaign is an initiative to support the cleanup of improperly disposed waste or loose items in areas such as roadsides, beaches, parks and outdoor recreation areas, with the aim of protecting the environment and support community residents.
#GOAM promotes the empowerment of young girls and women through projects and workshops, and is guided by the principles of community service. The role of women growing day by day, the women’s movement is spreading in all contexts. TCIFA recognizes that empowering women leaders is a huge success of organizations that continue to encourage girls and women to participate in all aspects.
#GOAM envisions a community committed to positive change, transformed through service. The vision of the program is to promote caring and inclusive communities that respect, empower and value all people to lead better lives. #GOAM aims to engage in analysis and address community concerns, explore ways to build strong relationships at different levels of society, and expand its footprint with increased support that reaches across the expanse of the “beautiful by nature” Turks and Caicos Islands.
