What other famous people have been sanctioned by Russia?

Russia imposed a new list of sanctioned people on Monday, including actors Sean Penn and Ben Stiller as well as a number of senators.

Russia has already imposed sanctions on the Americans – dating back to before their invasion of Ukraine in February.

Here are some notable examples of the nearly 1,000 people banned by Russia.

Joe Biden

The US president was sanctioned in March 2022 shortly after calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a war criminal. His son Hunter was also banned from entering Russia.

hillary clinton

The former secretary of state was on the list with Biden. He criticized Vladimir Putin several times during his career.

Kamala Harris

The vice president was hit with a travel ban in April.

George Stephanopoulos

The ABC News anchor was on the same list as Harris. ABC was one of several outlets to curb comeback operations in Russia after the country passed a new law that fined or jailed journalists and organizations for reporting “fake news” about the military.

Mark Zuckerberg

The Meta CEO and Facebook founder was also included on the list along with Harris after restrictions on Russian media were limited on Facebook. Russia banned Facebook and Instagram for extremism in response.

George Soros

The philanthropist was banned in 2015 after Russia said a pro-democracy charity he was funding posed a security threat to Russia.

Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Madonna

The pop icons were banned a decade ago after promoting gay rights at separate concerts around the country.

Russia sanctioned Freeman in May after he recorded a video about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Rob Reiner

Reiner was banned for directing Freeman’s video.

Oprah Winfrey

The former TV host also criticized the invasion and was included on the list along with Freeman.

“The courage of the Ukrainian people has lit a fire in people around the world – count me among them,” she wrote in March.
